Italy Vegan Food Adventure
A brand new vegan-themed trip in Europe, from Venice to Rome, and discover why Italy positively excels at vegan food. It's more than just olive oil and bread, more than just one funghi and pappardelle, espresso and gelato - it's the dedicated producers at all levels of hospitality that have taken up the movement with gusto and zero compromise. From the backstreets of Venice to the folloing holls of Tuscany, see how the Italians do it better, especially when they are bucking the trends and rewriting the rules.
Welcome to Venice and your chance to meet your guide and group members at 6pm. Vegans will have no problem finding a decent repast in this town, remember 'senza latte' (no milk) will be your go to phrase when in a gelataria. Your welcome dinner this evening is in La Tecia Vegana, Venice's first all-vegan restaurant, modern but with old-school tablecloths to give it the Italian touch, and set in a beautiful old brick building. It prides itself not only on vegan food but all organic ingredients.
Head to the markets bright and early, walking down to the canals and watch farmers unload their produce from boats, ready to be sold in the Rialto food market. A guided orientation walk through the city, including a coffee stop in the Jewish quarter, here you will learn the similarities between kosher and the vegan movement. There will be a taste of vegan Jewish cookies. The rest of the day and evening are free to explore.
Today you take the train to Bologna where you leave your bags and enjoy an orientation walk to help you get your bearings. It is a town characterised by medieval architecture, an intellectual culture and its famous food. In the afternoon you take a short train ride to Modena to visit Acetaia di Giorgio, a traditional balsamic vinegar producer. Tour the premises and taste all their exquisite vegan balsamic vinegar. The train ride back then allows you free time to relax and explore Bologna.
Today you try your hand at vegan Italian cooking, start the day with a market visit to seek out fresh produce and local ingredients. A professional chef with a rich knowledge of nutrition will school you in inventive vegan twists to Bolognese classics. Afterwards you will enjoy a feast of your own creation.
DAY 5 This morning you take the train to Certaldo followed by a transfer to San Gimignano. A guided walk will give you an overview of the agriturismo and enjoy a vegan and biodynamic wine and food tasting, sampling some bespoke organic vegan produce. At dinner tuck into a home-cooked vegan feast at the restaurant next to the villa you will be staying in. I Pini, a dedicated vegan abode in a gorgeous setting overlooking the hills, the walls of the villa are made of chalk and the floor is made of organic screed. .
DAY 6 A scenic walk from the agritourismo into San Gimignano and enjoy a visit to Vernaccia Wine Musuem. Listen to the history behind many famous wines and enjoy a taste whilst taking in the sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. Continue to the town square and visit the award winning local gelataria, a world champion twice, and enjoy a taste of vegan sorbet ice cream done by the true experts. .
DAY 7 Your final journey is to Rome, a four hour rail journey takes you to the Eternal City. An afternoon walking tour to get your bearings and take in the iconic sites of this magnificent city. This evening your farewell dinner is at Il Margutta, a vegetarian spot that's been on the food map for over thirty years. They offer a variety of vegan dishes and on top of that if you see an entrée you love that contains cheese or egg the chef will gladly make it vegan-friendly. .
DAY 8 After breakfast your tour ends. However why not extend your stay to use your new found knowledge and enjoy a little more of the cuisine on offer.
